What is Sammed Shikharji?
Before you plan anything, it is important to understand what this place is. Sammed Shikharji is a holy mountain located in the Giridih district of Jharkhand, India. It is the most sacred pilgrimage site for people who follow the Jain religion.
Jains believe that 20 out of 24 Tirthankaras attained Moksha here. Moksha means freedom from the cycle of birth and death. Because of this belief, Sammed Shikharji holds a very special place in the heart of every Jain person. The mountain is also known as Parasnath Hill and it is the highest peak in Jharkhand at about 1,350 metres above sea level.
Step 1 – Decide When to Go
The first step in planning your Sammed Shikharji Yatra is to pick the right time. The best months to visit are October to March. During this time, the weather is cool and walking on the hill is comfortable.
Avoid going in the summer months of April to June because the heat can make the long walk very tiring. Also avoid the monsoon months of July to September because the paths become wet and slippery, which can be unsafe.
If you can, try to visit during a Jain festival. The atmosphere during festival time is very special and full of devotion.
Step 2 – Plan Your Travel
The nearest railway station to Sammed Shikharji is Parasnath Railway Station. It is around 18 km from the base of the hill. Trains are available from many major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. This is the easiest and most affordable way to reach.
If you are flying, the nearest airports are in Ranchi and Kolkata. From there, you can take a train or bus to Parasnath.
By road, you can reach the area from nearby towns like Giridih, Dhanbad, and Bokaro. Many private taxis and buses are also available.
Once you reach Parasnath station, you can take a local vehicle to Madhuban town. Madhuban is the base camp of the Yatra and your actual journey begins from here.
Step 3 – Book Your Stay in Madhuban
Madhuban has many dharamshalas which are rest houses run by Jain trusts. These are clean, simple, and available at very low cost. As a beginner, it is a good idea to book your stay in advance, especially if you are visiting during a festival or holiday season.
The dharamshalas serve satvik vegetarian food. Please note that non-vegetarian food and alcohol are strictly not allowed in Madhuban and on the entire hill. Leather items like leather belts and bags should also not be carried into this area. These are important rules and every visitor must follow them.
Step 4 – Understand the Yatra Route
The Sammed Shikharji Yatra route is about 27 km in total. The walk starts from Madhuban and goes up the hill and back. On the way, there are 20 Tonks. Each Tonk is a small temple dedicated to one of the Tirthankaras who attained Moksha on this hill.
As a pilgrim, you stop at each Tonk, offer your prayers, and then move to the next one. This is the heart of the Sammed Shikharji Yatra. The full walk takes around 8 to 10 hours depending on your pace and the time you spend at each Tonk.
Most pilgrims start their walk very early in the morning, around 4 or 5 AM. This helps them avoid the heat and complete the Yatra before evening.
Step 5 – Pack the Right Things
As a first-time visitor, packing the right things will make your Yatra much easier. Here is what you should carry:

If you have any health problems like heart issues, joint pain, or breathing problems, please talk to your doctor before you plan this Yatra. The mountain path is manageable but it is still a long physical journey.
Older people and children can also do the Yatra but they should take it slow and take breaks whenever needed. Palki and doli services are available for those who cannot walk the full route.
