I've lost count of how many times I've seen Avenged Sevenfold get lumped in with the whole "hair metal revival" thing, but honestly, it's always struck me as way off base. I mean, sure, they've got that same LA Sunset Strip aesthetic down pat – the spandex, the big hair, the whole shebang – but their actual sound is anything but retro. I've always thought of them as more of a bridge between the Sunset Strip's excess and the heavier, more aggressive sound that was emerging at the same time.

From Waking the Fallen to STATICA

Avenged Sevenfold's music has never been subtle, and I think that's part of the reason why people have such strong reactions to them. On one hand, you've got people who love their over-the-top, riff-based songwriting and M. Shadows' wailing vocals; on the other, you've got people who find it all a bit too much – too loud, too obnoxious, too... metal. Me? I'm firmly in the former camp. Give me some of their heavier stuff, like "Beast and the Harlot" or "Afterlife", and I'm as good as sold.

But STATICA, their latest EP, feels like something of a departure even from their own catalog. I've listened to it a bunch of times now, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it – it's just so... different. The production is way more stripped-back than what we're used to from A7X, with a much greater emphasis on atmosphere and texture. It's like they're trying to show off a more experimental side of the band, but at the same time, it still feels distinctly Avenged Sevenfold – like they're pushing against the boundaries of their own sound, rather than trying to break free from them entirely.
