What is Sammed Shikharji?
Sammed Shikharji is the most sacred pilgrimage place for Jain people. It is located in the Giridih district of Jharkhand, India. The hill is also called Parasnath Hill and it is the highest peak in Jharkhand at about 1,365 meters above sea level.
According to Jain belief, 20 out of 24 Tirthankaras attained moksha at this place. Moksha means freedom from the cycle of birth and death. This is why Sammed Shikharji Yatra holds so much importance in the Jain religion. It is not just a trek on a hill. It is a deeply personal and spiritual experience that every Jain person wants to do at least once in their life.
How to Reach Sammed Shikharji

How to Do the Full Sammed Shikharji Yatra
The actual Sammed Shikharji Yatra starts from Madhuban and goes up to the top of Parasnath Hill and back. The total distance of the trek is about 27 to 28 kilometers. Here is a step-by-step understanding of how the yatra works:
Step 1 – Start Early
Most pilgrims start the yatra very early in the morning, around 3 AM to 4 AM. Starting early is important because the full trek takes around 10 to 12 hours. Starting before sunrise also means you avoid the afternoon heat.
Step 2 – The Trek Begins
From Madhuban, the path goes into the forest and slowly climbs uphill. The path is marked and easy to follow. There are small tea stalls and rest points on the way where you can take a break and drink water.
Step 3 – Visit All 20 Tonks
On the way up the hill, there are 20 tonks. Each tonk is a small temple dedicated to one of the Tirthankaras who attained moksha at Sammed Shikharji. Pilgrims stop at each tonk, offer prayers, and then move ahead. This is the most important part of the Sammed Shikharji Yatra. Skipping a tonk is not considered complete.
Step 4 – Reach the Top
The highest point of the yatra is the Shri Shikharji Tonk, which is the main and most sacred tonk. When you reach the top, you will feel a great sense of peace and achievement. Many pilgrims sit here for a while, pray, and take in the view of the forests below.
Step 5 – Return to Madhuban
After the top, pilgrims come back down the same path. The downhill walk is easier but still takes time. Most pilgrims return to Madhuban by evening.
