What I Learned After Styling CDG Hoodie for 7 Days

I've been wearing a black PLAY hoodie for some time now, but I had never really pushed it. It was what I took when I wanted to live without thinking about clothes. So I decided to really apply it for a whole week, each day I would make a new outfit and see what went well and what didn't. Some of it was self-evident in later years. I'm not surprised by some of that.

The obvious outfit first

I began what I would normally do. Black PLAY hoodie, dark denim, clean white sneakers. commedesgarrcons.com Converse low tops were the obvious choice as being on brand. It worked fine. Went well neither too much or too little. The type of fit you'd want to wear when going about your day without worrying about it. Not much going on, just a good starting point for the rest of the week.

layer it under something

I thought I'd try the hoodie underneath an oversized canvas jacket with the heart logo unzipped to show it in its entirety. This was better than I thought it would be. The hoodie provided some defined layering under the jacket without being too filling, and the logo sticking out was an added level of interest to the look. What I realized along the way: the PLAY hoodie has enough thickness that it can be worn as a layer, whereas not all hoodies are thick enough to be used as a layer.

Rotate to different activities, then back.

I needed a break from the hoodie half way through the week. This is where 2-3 easier pitcher pieces come in handy. That day I wore a officialstussyy.com hoodie, same line, same style, same logo, same weight cotton, and it made me realize how different the two fit into a set. The Stussy is more neutral, easier to build around, while the CDG piece will always be somewhat the show-stopper, whether it's meant to be or not. Useful, but for different days.

Going more relaxed

Replaced jeans with wide leg trousers, retained hoodie and slightly bulkier shoes. The soft hoodie and more structured trousers silhouette were a good contrast. I don't think I was pushing it, which is the danger when wearing wide leg trousers if they're not supported by the other clothing. This ended up being one of the better fits of the week.

The fourth day was the day that I tried to do too much.

Went with a more boisterous jacket over the hooded sweatshirt and some big statement shoes below. It was too much. The heart logo was lost in the noise and the entire fit just looked like it had a battle royal going on. Whenever I saw it, I learned my lesson. The CDG piece is best in the outfit when it is the most interesting part of the outfit (not the most interesting thing).

What is the cold weather version of Day 6?

Under the hoodie wore another heavier coat with the hood over the collar. Cargo pants, boots. This wasn't really used for the logo much, as it was hidden behind the coat, so I wondered if it was still working as I wanted it to. But it still felt right, mostly because I knew it was there, and also because the weight and shape of the hoodie affected the way the coat would sit on it versus if it was a thinner layer.

it feels good to go back to simple on purpose!

On the last day I took a deliberate plunge into simplicity. No hoodies, straight leg jeans, white tees showing at the collar or no shoes. No jackets, no extras! This was the simplest way to wear this week, and likely the most flattering. The only thing that could have been in there would have been the heart logo. In some cases, it's simply less.

What did happen to the children after the week?

Now, I'm more conscious of using the hoodie. I was defaulting to it when I didn't want to think, before this. Now, when I want the fit to have a point to focus on but don't need to overdo it because of all the other stuff I put around it. The week has certainly been a testament to the fact that the CDG PLAY hoodie is not a background piece. It's an opening track that requires softer backing vocals.

Another thing I learned is that if it's a CDG piece, it's easier to use right if you have 1 or 2 simpler items in the same category, such as another hoodie, another sweatshirt without a strong brand or name to it, and so forth, so that you don't have to reach for the CDG when you really need something plain.

FAQs

Is the CDG hoodie a daily must-have that you can't get tired of?

Yes, but it would be beneficial to change up the music surrounding it, not just using the same backing tracks every time.

What is the worst possible style with a CDG hoodie?

Combining it with too many other overpowering accessories. The heart logo must not be overshadowed by competing elements and must take up space to be the focus of the design.

Is the CDG hoodie suitable for layering?

Yes, it is thick enough to support jackets and coats, unlike many hoodies that fall into the same category that are not.

What is the simplest outfit to create it around?

Dark jeans, plain shoes, no flashy clothes. The fewer other logos that the logo is competing with the more it will be able to read.

Is it okay to wear the CDG hoodie in warmer weather?

It is warm running and so more of a transitional/cold weather piece. Finer PLAY, such as tees, are more suitable for the summer months.

So, what would go well with a CDG hoodie for a stylish and casual outfit?

Plain pants or dark denims, simple shoes and jackets that don't have too much branding. Allow the hoodie to speak for themselves.
